An extra week has been added to the Waterloo Schools' academic year calendar to allow the district to make up nine days of classes canceled by weather this winter.

District officials announced the schedule changes Monday night.

The last day for students -- except seniors -- will now be Friday, June 7, district spokeswoman Tara Thomas said. Originally, the school year was scheduled to end on Friday, May 31.

The additional week, technically, adds five days to the end of the school year. Thomas said extra hours built-in to the original calendar will cover some of the missed time, so one of the snow days is being forgiven and will not need to be made up.

According to Thomas, the other three snow days will be made up on dates when students were initially not scheduled to have school. She said classes are now going to be held district-wide on March 8, April 5 and April 22 to make up the rest of the missed time.
