A Waterloo woman has been arrested for filing a false report, claiming her child was injured by a hit-and-run driver.

32-year-old Anita Nelson allegedly gave false statements to police, medical staff, and the Iowa Department of Human Services.

Emergency workers were called out the evening of April 18 to the area of East 9th and Mulberry Streets in Waterloo, where they found Nelson's young daughter in the road.

Nelson claimed the girl was struck by a hit-and-run driver, however she later recanted and told officials the girl was hanging onto her boyfriend's vehicle, as he was backing out of a driveway. The girl became caught in the wheel well, and the boyfriend drove away.

The girl was taken to University Hospitals, where she was put into a medically induced coma.

Nelson said she changed her story because she did not want her boyfriend to go to jail.
The investigation continues.
