Halloween tends to divide people into two camps: those (like me) that embrace the spooky and scary, and those that couldn't care less and are already preparing the Christmas decorations. But Halloween is the best time to seek out thrills and chills and the things that scare us. However, there are some fears that simply won't go away when the calendar shifts to November.

Webster's Dictionary defines phobias as "exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fears of a particular object, class of objects, or situation." But these fears and anxieties, rational or not, are pretty common. So much so, that people spend A LOT of time trying to find out more about them.

Your Local Security used Google’s autocomplete feature to find the 15 most common ways to end the phrases “why am I afraid of/to” and “why am I scared of/to.”

For example, gamophobia, fear of long-term obligations or marriage, was #1 in Nevada (What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, right?) and somniphobia, fear of sleep, was tops in Florida. As for Iowa's? Well, I can't say I disagree with it.

Arachnophobia was the most common fear in 11 different states, including Iowa. Seriously, spiders are creepy and gross and the fuel of my nightmares. Oddly enough, anthrophobia--fear of people/social situations--was also the most-searched in 11 states. That might explain my aversion to shopping at Walmart.
