My girlfriend & I just broke up after 2 1/2 years together. It was a very amicable split--not too many harsh words were said--and we both agreed that it was probably the right thing to do. That didn't make it any less difficult or emotional. Music has always served as a form of therapy for me and has allowed me to tap into those emotions, for better or worse. Here are some of my "favorite" breakup songs.

Some of these songs are about longing for that lost love, some are about coming to terms with your breakup, and some simply represent an angry "middle finger to the sky" type of feeling. In no particular order:

Usher - "Burn" (2004)

Justin Timberlake - "Cry Me a River" (2003)

Puddle of Mudd - "She Hates Me" (2002)

The Starting Line - "Hello Houston" (2002)

Cee-Lo Green - "Forget You" (2010)

Coldplay - "The Scientist" (2002)

Kanye West - "Heartless" (2008)

Timbaland ft. OneRepublic - "Apologize" (2007)

Tony Rich Project - "Nobody Knows" (1997)

Bruno Mars - "Grenade" (2010)

Katy Perry - "Wide Awake" (2012)

Gotye - "Somebody That I Used To Know" (2011)

Everyone's personal style varies (a breakup song means different things to different people) but I think this covers all phases--despair, sadness, anger, yearning, self-doubt, resilience, recovery.
